Title: Knots and numbers

Abstract
A game will be played in which a rational number or infinity will be attached to some knots called rational tangles. The knowledge of this number will allow the students to unknot the tangles. These and other knots were introduced by the mathematician John Conway in the sixties, and have several applications, including the study of the DNA.

Läkemedelsutveckling går ofta ut på att empirisk visa att en ny behandling är bättre än en befintlig behandling (eller ingen behandling). Experimenten utförs på antingen djur eller människa och innehåller därför biologisk variation som kan likställas med slumpmässiga fel. En genomsnittlig effektskillnad behöver därför diskuteras utifrån sannolikheten att få en så pass sned fördelning som man fått om inte det är någon bättre effekt än man får med befintlig behandling. Lite kring matematiken runt detta kommer att diskuteras under föredraget.

Development of pharmaceuticals is often based on empirical experiments showing a new treatment is superior to an existing treatment - or no treatment. The experiments are often including animals or humans and thereby they include biological variation that could be interpreted as be random errors. A difference in means in an experiment with random errors needs to be discussed from a probability point of view and from calculating the probability to get such a skewed result as got- if the treatments are equal. Some discussions around this will
be presented.
